Die PopKomm 2009 findet nicht statt, die Musikindustrie sei zu sehr gebeutelt von den illegalen Downloads.

Und einmal mehr wirft die Diskussion hohe Wellen. Die einen finden, es müsse sowieso alles gratis sein. Das finde ich auch, wenn ich im Supermarkt an der Kasse stehe, und es ist wieder mal ziemlich teuer – nur kann ich die Yoghurts nicht einfach mitlaufen lassen, ohne gelegentlich im Gefängnis zu landen. Die anderen plädieren für die Kultur-Flatrate, was vielleicht nicht das Dümmste ist. Es braucht dann einfach eine lückenlose Erfassung aller Downloads und eine gerechte Verteilung gemäss Anzahl Downloads.

Das Grundproblem an dieser Diskussion ist allerdings immer wieder, dass stets nur von der Musikindustrie die Rede ist und ganz selten nur vom Künstler. Die Industrie hat sich historisch zwischen Künstler und Publikum geschoben und kräftig, zu kräftig abgesahnt. Sicher gibt es im Business viele sehr gute Leute mit einer Leidenschaft für Musik, aber unter dem Strich hat sich die Industrie ein zu grosses Stück vom Kuchen abgeschnitten und sich bei Künstlern und Publikum sehr unbeliebt gemacht. Darum weint ihr kaum einer eine Träne nach, wenn sie auf dem Müllhaufen der Geschichte landet.

Aber, liebe Internetpiraten, was ist mit den Musikern, denen ihr das Brot wegnehmt?

Sometimes young musicians ask me about using psychedelics to work creatively and I tell them about our times in the late seventies and early eighties when Stella and I started working on the PSYCHOTRON album of our Schaltkreis Wassermann project and usually took some LSD (info at Erowid) more or less every weekend. At that time we were in close contact with Dr. Albert Hofmann, discoverer of LSD, and Prof. Jiri Roubicek, the Czech psychiatrist who had done intensive research on LSD healing of psychiatric patients together with Stanislav Grof. We would have loved to set up our experiments under scientific supervision but that wasn’t possible at that time. Anyway, this is what turned out to be our findings and our favorite method.

As outlined by Timothy Leary set and setting are the determining factors for a psychedelic experience. Set being the mood you’re in when you take the substance and setting the place, surroundings and people you’re with. So you have to carefully think about where you can be without being disturbed, preferably in a pleasant environment with people you like and who’ll be supporting and positive. Of course it helps to be in a balanced mood yourself and without any tensions with the people you’re with. It is best to have eaten some light but substantial food like Muesli, fruit and nuts about two to three hours before taking the substance.

After the ingestion there’s a waiting period of about 20 to 40 minutes and then the action starts to set in. You’ll begin to notice that your visual and aural perception changes. With closed eyes you see colorful whirling patterns and maybe you start to wonder who you really are. The effect gets stronger and stronger until it reaches a peak. Its height depends on the dosage you’ve chosen and of course on set and setting. After the peak you come down a bit to a plateau level where the psychedelic effect is still clearly there but not overwhelming anymore. This is the time to work musically. If you have some kind of a studio it’s practical to have set up, turned on and tested everything before embarking.

We found that moderate dosages of 80 to 120 or maximum 150 micrograms work best for electronic music. You don’t want to feel sorry to sit in front of a screen or an electronic keyboard when the effect is so strong that you’d prefer to be in nature, dancing or just lying on the bed with your beloved one and let your mind float. You need to be enough down to earth to think logically but still wired to the astral spheres and in direct contact with your intuition. Of course you must know the ins and outs of your instruments – you don’t want to read a manual in that state, it would be a terrible waste of energy. Playing a real instrument like the guitar is even more rewarding, you can be pretty sure to make some interesting or even amazing progress.

For us it worked best to be out in nature for the first stages. If you don’t live in the country you would need a tripsitter to drive you home or to the studio safely and pleasantly. Maybe you need some nuts or dried fruit before work to give the body some energy.

Unfortunately in these times of repression it is very difficult to know about exact dosage and purity of substances. If you find a good source then it’s best to get yourself some supply, start out with low dosages and then slowly approach the right level that works for you.

Es bewegt sich was in den USA zum Thema Cannabis: US-Justizminister Eric Holder hat weitere Ueberfälle der Drug Enforcement Agency DEA auf legale medizinische Cannabis-Verteilstätten untersagt.

Ein Reporter hatte gefragt, ob die in Kampfmontur ausgeführten DEA-Razzien, bei denen routinemässig Einrichtungen zerstört und Gelder und Cannabis beschlagnahmt wurden, unter Präsident Obama weitergehen würden. “Nein,” sagte Holder. “Sie werden überrascht sein, aber was der Präsident sagte während der Kampagne, (…) ist jetzt amerikanische Politik.”

Gleichzeitig hat der kalifornische Parlamentarier Tom Ammiano eine Vorlage eingebracht, um Cannabis vollständig zu legalisieren und zu besteuern. Die Top-Steuerbeamtin Betty Yee hat ausgerechnet, dass dadurch etwa 1.4 Milliarden Dollar jährlich in die ausgetrocknete kalifornische Staatskasse gespült würden. Ammiano wurde bei der Ausarbeitung seines Vorschlags von NORML beraten. Der Vorstoss entspricht in etwa der Initiative “Pro Jugendschutz”, die letzten Herbst vom Schweizer Stimmvolk abgelehnt wurde.

Ende letzten Jahres hatte Obama’s website change.gov in einer gross angelegten Umfrage das amerikanische Volk um Feedback gebeten, welche politische Frage am dringendsten von ihm gelöst werden sollte. Nummer eins war die Re-Legalisierung von Cannabis. Obama hatte dann kurz und bündig abgelehnt: “President-elect Obama is not in favor of the legalization of marijuana.” Nun könnte seine Strategie darin bestehen, dass er die DEA zurückbindet und die einzelne Staaten wie Kalifornien die heissen Kohlen aus dem Feuer nehmen lässt.

Und hier ein Statement von Mr. Obama himself, der immerhin mal zugegeben hat, dass er inhaliert hat, aber nun vorsichtig um das Thema herum laviert. Er will wohl nicht als Hippie und als “soft on drugs” abgestempelt werden…

Danke an Apple für Time Machine

Gestern ist mir mein MacBookPro aus der Tasche gefallen und von etwa einem Meter Höhe auf den Boden geknallt. Das Gehäuse wies zwei Dellen auf, aber das System und der Monitor schienen noch zu funktionieren, die Festplatte hingegen war offensichtlich futsch.

Ich ging sofort zum Händler und liess mir eine neue 500GB-Platte einbauen. Nach dem Aufspielen von OSX habe ich die Option angeklickt, vom “Time Machine”*-Backup alle Daten einzuspielen. Das dauerte etwa vier Stunden für fast 250GB und danach konnte ich einfach weiterarbeiten – was für eine Erleichterung!

Bisher hat nur ein Programm gezickt: Dreamweaver verlangte eine Neu-Installation. Das Apple “Mail”-Programm holte mir gleich alle fehlenden Mails vom Server. Da ich nicht täglich ein Backup erstellt hatte, fehlen mir ein paar Dokumente, was aber zu verschmerzen ist. Ich hole mir nun gleich eine grössere Backup-HD und verspreche feierlich, ab sofort täglich ein Backup zu erstellen, was ja nicht mehr Arbeit bedeutet, als die Platte kurz einzustöpseln…

*“Time Machine” ist eine in Mac OSX enthaltene Funktion, die es dem Benutzer auf sehr einfache Weise ermöglicht, regelmässige Backups durchzuführen – Festplatte einstöpseln reicht aus.

Ecstasy (MDMA) weniger gefährlich als behauptet

Spiegel-Online berichtet in seiner wissenschaftlichen Abteilung über eine neue Studie betreffend MDMA, populär auch Ecstasy genannt. (Vorsicht: was auf dem Schwarzmarkt als “Ecstasy” verkauft wird, enthält oft wenig bis gar kein MDMA!)

Die Metastudie des Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) im Auftrag der britischen Regierung ist zum Schluss gekommen, dass Ecstasy deutlich weniger gefährlich ist, als bisher behauptet. Eine 2002 in “Science” publizierte und an Affen durchgeführte Studie hatte vor schwersten Hirnschädigungen gewarnt und dadurch weltweit für härteste Strafen für Konsum von und Handel mit MDMA gesorgt. Ein Jahr später musste zugegeben werden, dass die Forscher für ihre Experimente gar nicht MDMA benutzt hatten sondern Amphetamin. Eine typische War-on-Drugs Propaganda-Aktion der Bush-Regierung halt.

Die neue Studie deckt sich mit den Ergebnissen der 2007 von der University of Bristol veröffentlichten Rangliste über die Gefährlichkeit von Drogen, wo Ecstasy auf Platz 18 landet, weit hinter dem prototypischen Rauschgift Alkohol, das allein in Deutschland 40′000 Tote pro Jahr fordert.

In England gibt es etwa 15 Todesfälle pro Jahr, die Ecstasy zugeschrieben werden, wobei aufgrund der Schwarzmarkt-Situation nicht schlüssig nachgewiesen werden kann, dass diese Opfer tatsächlich MDMA konsumiert hatten, und falls ja, in Kombination mit welchen anderen Substanzen.

Trotz dieser deutlichen Herabstufung der Gefährlichkeit von MDMA will die britische Regierung die Gleichstellung von MDMA mit Heroin und Crack nicht zurücknehmen. Innenminister Alan Campbell: “Die Regierung möchte jungen Leuten und der Öffentlichkeit nicht signalisieren, dass wir Ecstasy nicht mehr so ernst nehmen.” Alles klar, es geht ja auch nicht um die Gefährlichkeit der Substanz, sondern um die Unterdrückung der Rave- und Neohippie-Kultur. Es ist ja so praktisch, wenn man unbescholtene Bürger, deren Philosophie der Regierung nicht passt, einfach ins Gefängnis wegstecken kann. Das nennt sich dann freiheitlich-demokratischer Rechtsstaat.

But as travelling in third world countries is an endeavour to be learned step by step there is a economic niche for entrepreneurs offering a safe environment for Ayahuasca exploration in the rainforest.

SpiritQuest is a sanctuary for plant medicine ceremonies lead by American biologist Howard Eugene Lawler who is a walking library on Amazonian customs and traditions. His place near Iquitos, Peru, on the Rio Momon is nice with a beautiful garden and two big malocas, round community houses built in the typical Indian style. He offers an all-inclusive healing experience with five ceremonies, a special diet as recommended by vegetalista curanderos and 4 star accomodation. Of course this comes with a price tag, more than 2′000 US Dollars for a ten day stay. Currently he works with the experienced and very gentle Shipibo maestro curandero Don Enrique and his partner Doña Wilma.

The SpiritQuest staff is friendly and helpful but the accomodation in wooden barracks is a far cry from the promised 4 stars, probably it’s not even 2 star, as there are no private showers. The rooms are tiny with only one bare lightbulb, no acoustic insulation towards the neighbours and no seating possibility except the beds, there isn’t even a table and a chair. For groups as large as 25 people (most shamans recommend a group size of not more than a dozen people) there are five hammocks and no other possibilities to relax, for instance in a comfortable deck chair. Normally there are two people in one room so the two of you pay 400 Dollars a night for a basic boy scout summer camp accomodation. If you consider this to be a shameless rip-off or a fair deal depends on your needs and your budget. It’s certainly untruthful advertising and a case of cashing in under pretense of wrong facts but it seems that most visitors don’t mind. Looks like they’re so busy with their experience that they couldn’t care less about whether or not they get the 4 star accomodation they paid for.

Some economic facts from the Peruvian Amazon: The usual local worker earns 10 to 15 Dollars a day. Experienced curanderos in Iquitos charge 15 to 25 Dollars per person for a session, there are also tales of sessions for only two dollars. Only superstar shamans like Don Alfredo charge up to 500 Peruvian Soles which amount to about 170 Dollars. You can get a nice and large 3 star suite in Iquitos for 65 Dollars, for instance in Amazon Apart Hotel, and if you want to have some really luxurious jungle place to stay you go to Amazon Rainforest Lodge where you get a spacious bungalow with your own private shower, your own little terrace with a hammock and a rocking chair, shower, ventilation and satellite TV for 140 Dollars a day (per bungalow, not per person). There is a swimming pool and, yes, of course, they have a dedicated maloca for Ayahuasca sessions. You can bring along your own shaman or do the session with one of those offered by the hotel. The only disadvantage is that there are normal tourists who drink beer and might want to sing karaoke at night.

Of course there are other ceremonial places for those interested in the Amazonian Vine:

Some of the best sanctuaries don’t advertise their services on the web and keep them to family and friends as the combination of moneymaking with sacred plants and higher consciousness is always a delicate question.

For those who want to learn more about the Amazonian vine there is this highly recommended book “Ayahuasca Visions: The Religious Iconography of a Peruvian Shaman“, with most fantastic paintings by Pablo Amaringo and a very informative introduction and comments to the pictures by Luis Eduardo Luna.

USA: Cannabis-Unterdrückung zu Ende?

Obwohl die amerikanische Drug Enforcement Agency letzte Woche nochmals eine Razzia bei einem kalifornischen Verteiler von Medical Marijuana durchgeführt hat, liegt seit Obama ein Wechsel in der US-Cannabis-Politik in der Luft, schreibt HuffingtonPost: The message is clear, said UCLA professor Mark Kleiman, a former Justice Department official and an expert on crime and drug policy. “It is no longer federal policy to beat up on hippies,” said Kleiman.

Ich vertrete ja schon lange die These, dass die Cannabis-Repression in Wirklichkeit der Unterdrückung der Hippies und jeglichen alternativen Lifestyles diene. Nun ist das plötzlich offiziell anerkannt: Kleiman said: “The message is, this is no longer drug warrior time. We are not on a cultural crusade against pot-smoking.”

Nochmals: Säuberungen bei Beatport

Vor ein paar Monaten habe ich zum Thema Säuberungen bei Beatport geschrieben. Es ging darum, dass der inzwischen zum Monopolisten aufgestiegene Digital-Download-Vertrieb Beatport für alle Arten von Tanzmusik seine Labels in gute und böse aufgeteilt und den bösen mitgeteilt hat, dass sie infolge eines Grossreinemachens nicht mehr erwünscht seien beim Branchengott Beatport. Und dies in rüdem Ton: “We make a cleanout from labels with no revenue, we checked the sales also from you guys and found labels that we want to inactivate if you can’t give me a reason to let it in.” Cleanout heisst Säuberung und da sind wir schon beim totalitären Vokabular.

Nun kam vor ein paar Tagen ein Kommentar rein (siehe unten), der so gut zum Beatport-Stil passt, dass man fast das Gefühl kriegen kann, er stamme aus derselben Küche in Berlin. Auch hier wieder dieselben faschistoiden Formulierungen: “schwarze Schafe” sind Labels, die nicht genügend verkaufen, sie müssen “enttarnt” werden und “ins Nirvana geschickt”. Das Bild der “schwarzen Schafe” hat kürzlich die rechtsextreme Schweizer SVP benützt, um in Plakatkampagnen Ausländer zu diffamieren.

Der frühere Pink Floyd Manager Peter Jenner hat 2004 gesagt: I think we’re in a time of technology change, and a change in the business model. We have to go back to first steps. Someone has to write, record, and perform a song. On the other end we have to have someone who wants to listen to it, and wants to pay for it in some way or another. Everyone else in that process is in some way dispensable. The model of the industry was built to help take the music and get it to the public has become very cluttered with people who take a lot of that money.

Sinngemäss bedeutet das, dass Musik primär ein Geschäft ist zwischen dem Musiker und dem Publikum. Alle, die dazwischenstehen, sind eigentlich überflüssig, sicher aber austauschbar. Tatsächlich ist es aber schon lange so, dass die Geschäftsleute, die sich zwischen Musiker und Publikum gedrängt haben, nicht nur den grössten Teil der Einnahmen abkassieren, sondern dazu noch frech und arrogant zu den Musikern geworden sind, sich für die Herren der Musikwelt halten, anstatt demütig und respektvoll einzugestehen, dass sie sich glücklich schätzen dürfen, mit Musikern zusammenzuarbeiten und dabei noch etwas zu verdienen.

Die grösste Frechheit liegt darin, dass von solchen Leuten behauptet wird, geringe Verkäufe hätten mit schlechter Qualität der Musik zu tun, wo sie als Verkäufer doch ganz genau wissen, dass in den allermeisten Fällen alleine das Marketing über Verkäufe entscheidet.

Musiker sollten sich zusammenfinden, um genossenschaftlich selber die Vertriebswege zu schaffen und zu pflegen, über die sie ihre Musik dem Publikum zugänglich machen. Das einzige Modell in diese Richtung, das ich kenne, ist fontastix in der Schweiz, ein Vertriebs-Projekt für unabhängige Musiker, bei dem ich mich sehr freue, daran beteiligt zu sein. CDbaby ist auch ganz cool und sehr musikerfreundlich, doch dieses Projekt ist kapitalistisch aufgebaut, der geniale Gründer Derek Sivers hat sein erfolgreiches Baby verkauft, und nun ist es halt auch dem Markt ausgeliefert, was bedeutet, dass es eines Tages vielleicht ganz plötzlich zugemacht wird, weil die Rendite vielleicht nicht mehr stimmt oder weil es einem neuen Besitzer ideologisch nicht mehr in den Kram passt. So, wie damals mp3.com von der Industrie aufgekauft wurde, um es kaputtgehen zu lassen.

Und hier nun noch der Kommentar von JEP, der Beatport sooo toll findet:

1. Wenn ein Label im Jahr nur 96 Tracks verkauft (so kommts rüber) kann ich es nachvollziehen das man es kickt! Die Leute kaufen nämlich wenn der Sound gut ist und wenn keiner kauft ist die Qualität und die Idee schlecht, sowas kann man durchaus nachvollziehen. Wozu gibts Netlabels oder archive.org?! Inzwischen glaubt ja jeder Vollpfosten daran, dass er auf Beatport sein ach so tolles Label hosten kann aber mal garkein Plan davon hat & da war Beatport die letzten Jahre sehr kulant, es wurde mal Zeit das die Schwarzen Schafe enttrant werden und ins Nirvana geschickt wurden.

2. Kenn selbst kleine Labels die in einem Zeitraum von 5 Wochen diesen Umsatz gefahren haben obwohl die Qualität nicht so ist wie bei Papa Hawtin.
Wenn man ordentlich arbeitet wird man auch ned gekickt!

3. 90% aller anderen Shops haben eine schlechte Ausschüttung & eine noch schlechtere Contentpflege, so kann es oft passieren, dass nicht alle Releases geladen werden oder später oder noch schlimmer früher!!! So das dein Release bevor es bei BP on geht schon als torrent zu finden ist.
Es gibt auch Shops die geben unter 0.5cent pro Download auf soetwas kann man gerne verzichten…

Beatport ist und bleibt der vernünftigste Laden für Labels und Künstler! Die Ausschüttung ist gut und das Einstellen der Tracks sehr leicht. Lediglich an der Benutzeroberfläche sollte viel gearbeitet werden, die Vorhörsektion die Qualität etc…aber sonst kauft bei Beatport wenn Ihr dem Künstler was gutes tun wollt!!!
